Drug & Alcohol Policy

Zero tolerance for operational personnel

Our Policies

Drug & Alcohol Policy

Black Pearl Maritime Security Management Limited operates a strict Drug & Alcohol Policy because the safety of crews, vessels and our own personnel depends on operatives being clear-headed, alert and in full command of their faculties at all times. Our teams carry and may be required to use firearms in defence of life; there is no margin for impairment. This policy establishes a zero-tolerance standard for substance misuse by personnel on operational duty and forms part of our health, safety and security management obligations.

Zero Tolerance on Operational Duty

From the point of mobilisation until demobilisation — including all time embarked on a client vessel, in transit, or in the custody of a floating armoury — personnel must not consume alcohol or be under its influence, and must not possess, use or be under the influence of any illegal drug or any substance that impairs their ability to perform their duties safely. This standard is absolute and admits no exceptions while on deployment.

  • No alcohol may be consumed during any deployment, including stand-down periods aboard a vessel.
  • The possession, use, supply or trafficking of controlled drugs is strictly prohibited and may be reported to the authorities.
  • Personnel must declare any prescription or over-the-counter medication that could affect alertness, judgement or weapon handling.
  • Personnel must report fit for duty and remain so throughout their watch.

Testing

To uphold this standard we reserve the right to require drug and alcohol testing of operational personnel. Testing may be carried out pre-deployment, on a random basis, for cause where impairment is suspected, and following any security incident or weapons discharge. Testing is conducted lawfully, with dignity and in accordance with our obligations under the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 regarding the handling of the resulting health information. A refusal to undergo testing without good reason is treated as a positive result.

Consequences and Support

Breach of this policy on operational duty is regarded as gross misconduct and will normally result in immediate removal from deployment and disciplinary action up to and including dismissal, alongside any referral to law enforcement that the law requires. At the same time, we recognise that dependency is a health issue. Personnel who voluntarily disclose a problem before it affects their duty will be treated supportively and confidentially, and will be assisted in accessing appropriate help where practicable.

This Drug & Alcohol Policy is issued to all personnel on engagement, briefed before every deployment, and reviewed at least annually.
